The difference between Physicial and Emotional Hunger

Filed under: General Hypnotherapy, Weight Loss — Tags: , , , , , , — Howard the Hypnotherapist @ 12:21 am

Have you ever wondered the difference between the two? If you are looking to lose weight or shed those extra pounds then this will be helpful. if you have constant cravings then this is a must read.

According to US research, there are five main differences between emotional and physical hunger:

1). Emotional hunger is a sudden feeling whereas physical hunger comes on gradually.

2). Physical hunger is felt in the stomach – emotional hunger is felt in the head e.g. a sudden craving for a particular type of food like chocolate or something sweet or sugar dense etc.

3). When you feel desperate to eat a particular type of food, it is an emotional need. If you are really hungry, then you are open to a wider choice of food options.

4). Emotional hunger wants to be satisfied immediately whereas physical hunger can wait.

5). Emotional hunger leaves you feeling guilty – physical hunger leaves you pleasantly full

Does this ring any bells for you?

Let me know if you would like more  information about tacking this issue or something else on your mind.

Quick Note on Emotional Eating

If you are looking to lose weight then this information will be useful to you and it is around emotional eating.

The human body has an automatic biochemical mechanism that has the ability to tell us when we are hungry and when we are full. The problem with emotional eaters is that they have trained their bodies and mind to override those signals.

Imagine it is nearing lunchtime and you are feeling the hunger signals being generated within the body. So you decide to get something to eat and a drink. As you eat and drink these the stomach begins to fill up, signals are sent informing you that you are being satisfied.  Once a level of satisfaction is reached naturally you should stop eating. That’s what is supposed to happen and irrespective of the amount left on your plate you will feel pleasantly satisfied leaving whatver is left. that is what typically people who are naturally slim do.

In the case of an emotional eater, the ‘stop signal’ is completely ignored and they carry on eating for a psychological reason rather than a physiological one. They go way beyond the point where they should really stop and feel bloated, lethargic and guilty. In fact if you are eating for psychological reasons then no amount of food is going to satify you. if you are an emotional eater you will probably be familiar with this process.

if you drive a car and the oil light comes on would the oil light go out if you topped up your fuel tank with petrol or diesel? Of course not so why do we continue to do this with food?

Why would a person want to do that?

The answer lies in ‘conditioning’ – we are taught when young that food can bring comfort. We are trained right from the time of being toddlers that food is a reward, a prize a comfort. “be good and you can have a sweet” “there there have a piece of chocolate to make your knee better” when you may have tripped.

Advanced Hypnotherpay and NLP are used in our easy weight loss sessions to deal with this in a completely different way. to find out more contact us now and find out how emotional eating and other elements come togeather with our Easy Weight Loss Sessions.

Weight Loss Hypnotherapy Studies

Filed under: General Hypnotherapy, Weight Loss — Tags: , , , , , , , — Howard the Hypnotherapist @ 12:00 am

Here’s some interesting studies that have been carried out on the success of Hypnotherapy as appossed to normal weight loss systems diets etc.

they are from the USA and if anyone has any more recent independant research from teh US or UK i would be gretful if you could let me know.

One of the things that you will ntice is the dates in the research and i am glad to say that things have improved dramatically in terms of process, tools and success rates.

Bolocofsky, David N.; Spinler, Dwayne; Coulthard-Morris, Linda (1985).

Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management.

Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41

109 17-67 year olds completed a behavioral treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. Results show that, at the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in significant weight reduction. However, at 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the hypnosis subjects showed significant additional weight loss, while those in the behavioral-treatment-only group exhibited little further change. More subjects who used hypnosis also achieved and maintained their personal weight goals.

Cochrane, Gordon; Friesen, J., (1986) Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Volume: 54 489-492

Investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment….hypnosis was more effective than a control group (17 vs. .5 pounds on follow-up).

Kirsch, Irving (1996).

Hypnotic enhancement of cognitive-behavioral weight loss treatments–Another meta-reanalysis.

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 64 (3), 517-519.

Averaged across post treatment and follow-up assessment periods, the mean weight loss was 6.00 lbs. (2.72 kg) without hypnosis and 11.83 lbs. (5.37 kg) with hypnosis….At the last assessment period, the mean weight loss was 6.03 lbs. (2.74 kg) without hypnosis and 14.88 lbs. (6.75 kg) with hypnosis… Correlational analyses indicated that the benefits of hypnosis increased substantially over time

Should you have any comments of questions please feel free to let me know.

Thanks and keep well

Emotional Eating

What is an emotional eater?

Under normal circumstances, a few minutes after birth, we are held by our mothers, feeling warmth, love, comfort and security. As we are being fed and gently rocked, our subconscious minds take this all in as a very nice situation to be in.

When you were young, it’s quite possible that you were rewarded with food for being good. If you hurt yourself or were upset, perhaps you were given some chocolate to ‘make you feel better’ or to “take your mind away from the trauma”.

These are all very pleasant feelings and the emotional eater attempts to recreate them as an adult by eating.

Most diets don’t deal with this issue and so people continue to eat when they are not hungry.

Most diets concentrate all their and your energy on “how much” you can or can’t eat, leaving the person feeling deprived.

A key to consistent and permanent weight loss is to ensure that you deal with your emotional eating and advanced hypnotherapy can help with this issue quickly.

If you are looking to lose weight quickly and easily in  very natural way without diets and meal plans or gunky shakes or pills off the Internet contact us today.

Hypnotherapy for Weight Loss

Finally a weight management programme will change your life!

Using the very latest in mind/body psychology I  help clients learn how to bring more balance into their lives, creating a purpose and direction for them to move towards… Be prepared for amazing changes in your life!

I have developed this successful programme  over the  past 6 years (2003) and have helped many hundreds of people lose weight effortlessly.

Many people look at overweight people and think they are greedy have no willpower, or that their appearance is due to lack of knowledge or ignorance. Being overweight, at least significantly so, is almost never just a matter of not knowing better; it’s far more complicated than that. and in my experience people who are overweight know a lot about what they should be eating.

There are often psychological problems associated with obesity – depression, lack of confidence, low self esteem etc. Most psychological problems are resolved naturally once the weight has been lost. Often the anxiety and frustrations that cause people to over eat stem from being over weight… it’s a vicious circle.

Dieting in the UK and worldwide is a multi billion pound business. There are literally  thousands of diet books, videos, food substitutes, weight loss drugs and weight loss clubs.

The trouble is all these treatments rely on willpower, which is why they usually fail! If you have had enough of all those diets that have found that they just don’t work for you in the long term…call us now for a revolution that will change your mind…and change your behaviour so that you too will become slimmer, have greater confidence and have many more choice in what you want to do and wear etc.

A common misconception surrounding weight loss is that you need a lot of willpower to succeed. Willpower however doesn’t really exist, behaviour that gives the appearance that a person has willpower, is simply behaviour allowed by the unconscious mind because it agrees with the conscious desire.

Generally if someone succeeds in losing weight using willpower alone, as soon as the weight is lost, they resume back to their old eating patterns and re-gain all the lost weight. Another common problem when using willpower alone is that as soon as other things occupy your mind, or the main goal is removed i.e. losing weight for a special occasion or slimming for a holiday, or an crisis arises, people have a tendency to slip back into their old habits. This compounds the problem because of the added disillusionment and discouragement. Something more efficient and permanent than willpower is needed to enable clients to stick to their new healthy eating regime.

So How does Hypnosis for weight loss help?

Hypnosis bypasses willpower and changes the way the unconscious mind thinks. This allows eating healthily and smaller portion sizes becomes effortless.

This works by utilising the same psychological principles you employ when mastering a new skill. If you are not able to imagine that you are going to be successful, then you are defeated before you begin. This is what happens when people undertake diets having previously failed many times before. No amount of willpower can surmount this feeling of negative history of failed diets.

Every successful person has had to be capable of visualising himself/herself as a success long before it becomes a reality. A doctor, for example, could not undertake many years of study unless he/she was first able to ’see him/herself as a doctor. Any successful person achieves their goals by overcoming handicaps, which defeated those people who were less motivated.

Unfortunately, all negative opinions – true or not – filter into your unconscious mind, which does not question or analyse the many impressions it receives. People become so convinced that they are incapable of the strength necessary to maintain a diet that they eventually stop mentally picturing a healthy/more attractive body. Using advanced hypnosis to create a positive self image is the key that open the door to a slimmer you. Once a proper self image is generated people find they have the conviction to easily stick to a healthy eating plan.

It is the role of the Hypnotherapist/coach to determine the most suitable treatment for each individual client but the following are examples of some of the benefits clients gain from hypnotherapy:

* Removes the desire to overeat
* Forms a positive self image
* Produces stronger feelings of strength and determination
* Improves self esteem, confidence and positive thinking
* Improves stress levels
* Occasionally weight gain is caused by a past event, uncovering this can help

Sometimes hypnotherapy uncovers secondary gains (reasons to remain overweight) and replacing weight gain with something more beneficial can help.

So with Advanced Hypnotherapy there are no diets, gunky shakes or pills off the Internet. No meal plans, potions to weight or calories to count.

You just get to eat the food that you want to eat but smaller portions, much much smaller potions.

Feel free to contact me if you truly want success…i can help get to where you want to get to easily.

Weight Loss Hypnotherapy

We use a unique combination of Advanced Hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), other advanced psycological tools  to help you permanently change the relationship you have with food.

This enables you to easily lose weight, stay in control and ultimately, become the size and shape you desire.

And as part of the process, will also help you to feel physically more relaxed, mentally calmer and, so much more confident within yourself. If this all sounds a little too good to be true, why not have a chat with us over the phone and find out a little more? the best way to make a decision is to put yourself in a fully informed position.

Why we are so successful at weight loss hypnotherapy?

Here’s something interesting  to think about.

Ask yourself the following: Why is it that weight is only a problem for two groups on earth: Humans the most intelligent species on the earth (that’s us!) and the animals we domesticate?

Why is it that whilst 40% of UK citizens are now classed as overweight, 99.99% of the other creatures on this planet, providing their food is available, eat as much as they want, whenever they want and are never overweight. Why is it that other creatures on this earth are not prone that never ending cycle of over eating and dieting?

The answer is really very simple.

The reason for this bizarre phenomenon is very simple – other creatures on this earth do not eat emotionally. The reason why so many people in the western world are overweight is because as a species we have learned to use food as a means to change our feelings. Indeed, most of our clients’ weight problems emanate from the fact that they eat when they are bored, lonely, miserable or any number of other emotional scenarios, NONE of which have anything to do with physical hunger.

It a sad fact that as a result of our conditioning from birth, we all have a propensity to bury our feelings in food, but if we eat because of emotional hunger, our bodies will never feel satisfied because no amount of food is going to change the way we feel – indeed ultimately, it will only end up making us feel worse.

We use Advanced Hypnotherapy and NLP  to help change your relationship with food by retraining you and your unconscious mind, that part of the mind that holds all our food related beliefs, associations and habitual patterns of behaviour.

Find out more by simply contacting us and putting yourself in a fully informed position only then can make the right decison for you.

Take care

The wrong reason’s for stopping smoking (yes there are more than one)

If you know where you are going you are more likely to get there. The number one way you can help yourself is by knowing what you want. This is true of Stopping Smoking as it is for everything else.

If you are trying to stop smoking for the wrong reasons you are much more likely to fall at the first hurdle. One of the wrong reasons might be convenience. What I mean by this is that you decide to stop but not because you are necessarily ready or committed to stopping it is just that a convenient situation as occurred for you. Here how it work’s.

A friend or partner husband or wife who is a smoker makes the suggestion that it would be a good idea to stop together. On the face of it this seems to be a great idea because you can support each other in remaining stopped and there is this nice feeling of doing something together… a shoulder to lean on a bit of safety in numbers you get the idea.

The reality is that although both people know they should stop smoking at some point in time, usually on this occasion it usually means that one person is really ready to stop but the other is going along with it because it is convenient or they have got caught up in this being a good idea without giving it too much thought.

Then what happens is that the person who hasn’t really made up their mind to stop, will at some point try and persuades or cajoles the other into just having that one. When they succeed in getting the other to have “just one” well both of you have failed and well you might as well start again. It is a kind of collusion to smoke, just as those of us colluded to smoke the very first time when we were young. In fact we did it because our peers did it and we wanted to be part of that crowd… accepted. The above is just one example of the same influences happening again.

That is why it is vital to stop smoking for your own good reasons.

Well this is just one reason there are many wrong reasons for stopping smoking that you will need to bear in mind. The reason we have such a high level of success is because we make sure that yo are not stopping for the 8 major wrong reasons why people fail at stopping smoking.

Good stop smoking practitioners want their clients to be successful. Of course you can stop smoking together but please do it for your reasons and not for someone else’s reasons or timing.
I certainly emphasise to people who come along in pairs for stop smoking or weight loss sessions, whether their friends, spouses, or partners, that they should be there for each other to keep to their decision to quit smoking for good and not to collude together to smoke.
If you believe the time is right for you right now then contact me today and see if Advanced Hypnotherapy by an Advanced Hypnotist will help you do it easily.
